Education technology startups have been doing enormously well in recent years with record amounts of investment from venture capital and angel investors. Direct sales of technology into schools has never been higher and many edtech start-ups are being snapped up by large education organizations like Pearson as they watch their old business models crumble.

In this feature are profiles of six education startups being incubated at the MaRS Discovery District who have strategies to balance their high-tech solutions with the often low-tech, risk-averse atmosphere of the 21st Century classroom. They each answer three questions on their strategy to capture a share of the education market in North America:

  • Toronto's CFC Media Lab is a world pioneer in digital interactive media & now they mean business.

…Another group developed an interactive musical instrument designed to help kids with autism develop connections with students in their class called DruMeBa The students follow the rhythm of some music by banging on a digital drum that triggers an animation on a central screen that gives them feedback on rhythm and accuracy. Played in groups, it's a technology that allows autistic children to communicate and develop social skills without having to physically touch other students; a product that has enormous application in the field of music therapy.
